Yes I’ll 2nd that 100%. Thank you both so much for all you do to keep Church High memories alive. Christine was an amazing teacher who certainly help me so much during my time at the school. Wishing you a Merry Christmas and all the best for 2023. X

I would like to invite all readers to join me in thanking the organisers of this site, Christine Chapman and Steven Farrell. I know they have both had health issues yet have continued to keep us informed. I am sure you would all like to join me in wishing them a very Happy Christmas and a very healthy New Year.

At Church High I always felt like a fish out of water, like I didn’t really belong. I’d always been at a co-Ed school, so girls all together was rather daunting for me. I wasn’t terribly academic and I struggled with maths and sciences, in which the school excelled. By the time I left, my time there definitely shaped me in to a more confident, self-assured person, rather than the mixed up kid that I was when I started. I learned to adapt quickly and stand on my own two feet, surrounded by some pretty strong and confident girls. Miss Ross was Head at the time I was there. She was always kind and reassuring. I was really grateful for that. It was a very empowering and positive time for me. I now look back and feel very grateful for my time there, rather than resentful, which was my overriding feeling at the time. I realise now that my parents wanted the best education that they could give me at the time, and Church High definitely shaped my future in a positive way.

Like Diana Nuttall I recall swimming lessons - at Jesmond baths and later the RGS pool - and music lessons with Miss More. The woodwind teacher was Captain Doull. I took singing with Mrs Hilda Brown. A few years ago I re-established contact with Miss More (who I now address as Sheila!), to whom I am most grateful for her encouragement, leading to my meeting interesting people, visiting interesting places for performance, recording etc., and even making a little money (on the side of a rather boring city career). Very impressed by the present school's modern facilities but sad to see the hall ceiling painted white and the honours boards removed: vandalism!

I attended Newcastle Church High School 1961-1970. I was always the smallest in the class. Lovely memories of the 3 houses and the grounds. I learnt the oboe with a peripatetic clarinetist. That was a challenge for me! My thanks to Miss More for my first taste of real music. I did leave to pursue Music & Art as not really catered for sufficiently here. My mother Pamela Brace and 2 cousins Judith and Sarah Brace attended the Central High School. Pleased the two schools are now united. We had our swimming lessons at the Central High. Later with the help of Newcastle's School of Music and the RNCM, I ended up a professional freelance oboist, orchestral, chamber and recital player in the Three Choirs country until 2005. I retired from music to become an artist and moved to Church Stretton where I was inspired by its AONB. Retired finally 2019.
